San Francisco, California
You may have heard the nickname of " The City by the Bay; Fog City " and yes, San Francisco has many long months of foggy weather; however, this does not take away from the beauty that is all around. San Francisco is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay gives it a unique and pleasant atmosphere even with the fog. Not only does it have the ocean but it also has majestic steep rolling hills and a unique mixture of modern architecture and Victorian buildings and home.
San Francisco has seen its ups and its down. In 1776, the Spanish had a fort and a mission here named for Francis Assisi. Next, it was the gold rush era in 1848, which created in a short time a huge population explosion. However, an earthquake hit on April 18, 1906. The mainshock occurred offshore about 2 miles from the city. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total length of 296 miles. The earthquake itself left 567 people dead, however, the never ending fires brought on from the quake and the aftershocks were as devastating if nor more so than the earthquake. Around 90 percent of the damage to San Francisco was attributed to the fires.
However, even though many citizens were left homeless they struggled their way back to the top and became once again one of the most populated cities in the nation.
San Francisco has many remarkable landmarks that draw people from all over the world such as the Golden Gate Bridge which was the location of the fort established by the Spanish, Alcatraz Island which at one time held some of the most notorious criminals in America such as Al Capone, their cable cars, the Transamerica Pyramid, Coit Tower, and Chinatown.
If you are in the mood for a cultural experience full of history, modern life, and of course, unique scenery then San Francisco is calling your name.
